What’s Wrong With Cops?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

So seriously?  What’s wrong with police people?  On Friday night, after a rehearsal, Scott, John and Andrew left to grab a beer at Scott’s house.  Andrew and John were on their bikes, and Scott was on foot.  We were riding putt putt putt on the sidewalk with Scott, and neither John nor Andrew had their lights on (but did have lights on their bikes, including bells - all the accoutrements required by law).  I mean - why  turn on lights in a pedestrian free zone (Queen east around the Greenwood yards) at night when there is nobody around.  And yes technically we were breaking the law.  We didn’t have lights turned on; we were riding on the sidewalk.  So what happens? John (black guy) gets a fucking ticket.  Andrew (white guy) doesn’t.  Hmmmm.  And the ticket was for not having lights on.  Not a fucking warning, not a “Hey, buddy, turn your lights on.  Thanks”.  No.  The cop saw a black guy on a bike, freaked out (he drove across the road and cut us off on the sidewalk, lights blazing), and then had to recover with this bullshit ticket. Scott and Andrew kicked in the cash to cover the ticket, but seriously.  What’s wrong with cops?  Keep in mind that the TTC strike had just been announced.  People were freaking out.  And this cop decides to ticket some dudes causing no problems on bicycles. And now I read cops doing stupid things in NY.
